Tesla has shifted its focus back to its autonomous ride-hailing ambitions, with CEO Elon Musk prioritizing the Robotaxi initiative. The company is currently conducting internal tests in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area, using a modified Model Y fleet instead of the speculated Cybercab. Employees are the sole participants in this phase, with vehicles equipped with the supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. So far, the fleet has completed over 1,500 trips, accumulating 15,000 miles (24,140 km) of real-world data.

A newly released demo video showcases the user experience: passengers can summon a Robotaxi via Tesla’s existing app, track arrival time, and control in-car features like music via a rear touchscreen. Emergency stop buttons are available, though each test vehicle still has a safety driver onboard. Tesla confirmed it won’t develop a standalone Robotaxi app, integrating the service into its current platform instead.
Musk aims to launch a limited commercial rollout in June, deploying 10–20 vehicles in Austin. Pricing remains undisclosed, and regulatory hurdles persist as FSD remains under supervision. The collected data will refine Tesla’s FSD algorithms, fleet dispatch systems, and remote assistance protocols.
