Tesla China has officially launched a retrofit package for Model Y owners, allowing them to upgrade their vehicles with a multicolored ambient lighting system. Priced at RMB1,299 ($180), the upgrade includes both hardware and software enhancements. The new system, controlled via the Model Y’s infotainment system, offers up to 256 color options for the cabin, creating a customizable and immersive in-car experience. The retrofit was first spotted and shared by electric vehicle enthusiasts on social media, with Tesla China describing the lighting as "even and soft," adding "unique charm" to the vehicle.

The retrofit requires replacing the Model Y’s classic wooden dashboard with a textile-based panel, the same material introduced in late 2023 as part of a minor update for Giga Shanghai-made Model Y vehicles. This update also included a new LED light strip for ambient lighting and updated wheel designs. The ambient lighting system supports touchscreen control, enabling drivers to adjust the colors based on their mood or driving scenario. Tesla China emphasized that the upgrade is designed to enhance the overall aesthetic and functionality of the Model Y’s interior.
However, the retrofit is only available for Model Y vehicles produced between January 24, 2022, and October 1, 2023. Tesla China advises interested owners to confirm their vehicle’s compatibility before proceeding. Additionally, the upgrade must be performed at a Tesla service center, and appointments should be scheduled at least five days in advance. This limited-time offer provides an affordable way for Model Y owners to modernize their vehicles with the latest interior features.
