The company has announced that the full self-driving (FSD) ride-hailing service is currently being tested among select employees in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area. To date, Tesla has completed over 1,500 rides and accumulated 15,000 miles of driving distance. This extensive testing is expected to aid in developing and validating the FSD network, mobile app, and vehicle dispatch systems. Tesla CEO Elon Musk commented on the video, emphasizing the goal of achieving driverless operation.
While the ride-sharing service utilizes Tesla’s "Full Self-Driving" software suite, the system requires continuous driver supervision and is not fully autonomous yet. Tesla's video disclaimer confirms that each vehicle is equipped with a safety driver ready to intervene if necessary. The company plans to initiate the Robotaxi service under remote monitoring this summer, with an initial trial using 10 to 20 Model Y vehicles in Austin, intending to gradually scale up and expand to other cities and vehicle models.
