Despite the presence of an existing supercomputer cluster at Tesla’s Giga Texas facility, recent satellite images reveal ongoing construction of a new facility named Cortex 2.0, signaling Tesla’s continued investment in high-performance computing. Located on the northern side of the campus, the new structure was initially labeled as a "Central Campus Support Facility," but recent updates now refer to it explicitly as Cortex 2.0. Construction of the building’s shell is currently underway, with building permits submitted for additional phases, and observer Joe Tegtmeyer estimates that Cortex 2.0 could be operational by the end of this year. Tesla plans to further expand the capabilities of the Cortex 2.0 cluster throughout 2024, aiming to bolster development in autonomous driving and AI.

Tesla’s ongoing investment in supercomputing infrastructure is primarily aimed at advancing its autonomous driving technology. Currently, Tesla’s FSD Full Self-Driving supervision version is deployed in a semi-autonomous mode, with plans to introduce fully autonomous ride-hailing services in Austin within the coming weeks. These vehicles will be equipped with the FSD unsupervised version, enabling real-world testing of fully autonomous operations. The enhanced computational power provided by Cortex 2.0 is expected to accelerate the development and deployment of these autonomous systems, positioning Tesla at the forefront of AI-driven transportation.
Beyond autonomous vehicles, Tesla’s supercomputing ambitions extend to its Optimus robot project. Elon Musk has indicated that Tesla aims to produce its first batch of Optimus robots within this year and plans to scale up production in 2024. Given the ambitious timelines, the new Cortex 2.0 facility is poised to play a critical role in supporting these projects, providing the necessary computational resources to handle complex AI training and simulations. Once operational, Cortex 2.0 is expected to rapidly reach full capacity, underpinning Tesla’s broader AI, robotics, and autonomous vehicle initiatives.
