Tesla's electric vehicle sales in Australia have taken a steep dive, plummeting 50.43% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year. New data from the Electric Vehicle Council reveals that Tesla sold only 5,160 EVs in Australia over the first three months of the year, with a slight rebound in March sales, totaling 2,829 units—down 21% from March 2024. While the Model Y showed resilience with just a 1.74% decrease in sales, totaling 3,114 units so far this year, the Model 3 was hit hard, with a staggering 71.74% drop and only 206 units sold in the first quarter.

The sales figures reflect a struggle for Tesla amid increased competition in the EV market, consumer hesitation before the release of a refreshed Model Y (new Model Y Juniper 2026), and backlash against CEO Elon Musk. Despite a minor recovery in sales for the Model Y and Model 3 in March, the overall trend paints a challenging picture for Tesla, which also reported a 13% global sales decline in the same period. Notably, its major competitor BYD saw a 39% surge in sales, highlighting the shifting dynamics of the EV market.
The ramifications of what some are calling the "Musk factor" have been profound, sparking consumer boycotts in North America and Europe, as well as nationwide protests led by the grassroots "Tesla Takedown" movement. These protests have affected brand perception, culminating in incidents of violence in multiple countries, including the US, Canada, and parts of Europe.
