Tesla has launched a new "commands" feature that enhances vehicle connectivity by allowing owners to perform key functions—such as unlocking the car or pre-heating the cabin—without needing an internet connection. However, this feature is not available for legacy Model S and Model X vehicles built before 2021.
Many Tesla owners enjoy the convenience of controlling their car remotely via the Tesla app. Whether it’s unlocking doors, opening the trunk, or activating the HVAC system, these actions can be done from their smartphone, all without physically touching the vehicle. While similar features exist in other vehicles, they typically rely on an internet connection to function. This can be problematic, especially in areas with poor or no service, such as rural regions where internet connectivity is spotty.
Previously, Teslas experienced this limitation too. For instance, if you were in a location without cell service and wanted to pre-heat your cabin, you couldn’t use your phone to do so. But now, Tesla is solving this issue by enabling communication between the car and smartphone via Bluetooth. This allows owners to perform essential commands even when there’s no internet connection available.
The new offline commands feature promises to increase reliability and speed when sending commands to the vehicle. To use the feature, owners must have app version 4.38 or newer. Unfortunately, the feature will not be available to legacy Model S and Model X owners, as these vehicles do not support the Bluetooth-based communication system.
