For the third year in a row, the Tesla Model Y has been crowned the most American vehicle by Cars.com, based on its significant contributions to the US economy through manufacturing, parts sourcing, and employment. Assembled at Tesla's plants in Fremont, California, and Austin, Texas, the electric SUV tops the list.
The study evaluated over 400 vehicles to determine which one was contributing the most to the US economy. The top four spots were dominated by Tesla, with the Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Model 3 taking the top four positions. The Honda Passport was another notable entrant, with its assembly plant in Lincoln, Alabama contributing significantly to the American economy.
The study found that US-based auto production facilities have seen a significant increase of 144% since 2020. Meanwhile, domestic auto manufacturing unionization efforts continue to be a hot topic, particularly in light of the upcoming presidential election.
Cars.com's American-Made Index lead researcher Patrick Masterson notes that while pundits often champion homegrown corporations as key to local and state economies, the badge on a vehicle's hood doesn't always reveal its economic contributions. In fact, 66% of vehicles on the American-Made Index come from foreign automakers that support communities in Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.
As factory workers weigh joining the United Auto Workers union, it remains to be seen how this trend will change in the future. For now, the Tesla Model Y stands as a symbol of American manufacturing excellence for a third consecutive year.
