Tesla is set to launch its autonomous taxi service based on the Full Self-Driving (FSD) unsupervised system in June. To facilitate a smooth rollout, approximately 300 test operators have been deployed in Austin, Texas. These operators are driving vehicles equipped with advanced autonomous driving software to accumulate crucial mileage while testing specific routes in the area. The company has already initiated a preliminary service for employees in Austin and the San Francisco Bay Area, although vehicles still have safety drivers onboard.

As Tesla considers using remote operators as a safety measure when the service opens to consumers, some of the current test drivers have transitioned to these remote positions. The company is also expanding its testing efforts by deploying drivers in key cities such as Atlanta, New York City, Seattle, and Phoenix, and has conducted training sessions with local emergency personnel to ensure preparedness.
Despite Tesla announcing a June launch, internal discussions are aiming for a more ambitious deadline of June 1. Ashok Elluswamy, Vice President of AI Software, indicated after a meeting with Elon Musk that the team is optimistic about meeting their internal target. However, the June 1 deadline is seen more as a motivational challenge, suggesting that a more realistic launch date could be June 30.
