Tesla Reveals Efficient Wireless Charger for Robotaxi

Tesla has announced that its upcoming wireless charger for the Robotaxi boasts an efficiency of over 90%. This is notably higher than the 70-75% efficiency typical for smartphone wireless chargers, which often struggle with heat and alignment issues.

SAE J2954 Standard The SAE J2954 standard, developed in 2020, established a grid-to-battery efficiency of up to 94% for EVs. Tesla aims to meet or exceed this benchmark with its wireless technology.

Addressing Key Challenges

Autopark Integration: Tesla's Autopark will help position vehicles accurately over the charging pad, resolving alignment issues. Future technology could enhance this precision, potentially using magnets similar to the Qi2 standard.

Heat Management: Unlike smartphones, Tesla vehicles can efficiently manage heat through their advanced battery management system (BMS). This allows for optimal temperature control during charging.

Beam Steering: A recent patent reveals Tesla's plan to use beam steering to direct energy precisely where needed. This will enhance alignment and manage heat by adjusting the charging zones dynamically.

Tesla's wireless charging solution represents years of development, following their acquisition of Wiferion. With the potential for inclusion in models like the Cybertruck and the upcoming Model Y Juniper Refresh, Tesla is poised to demonstrate the viability of wireless EV charging in its lineup.
