Tesla Set to Benefit from Loss of EV Tax Credit, Wedbush Says

The potential removal of the $7,500 electric vehicle (EV) tax credit under the Trump administration may actually boost Tesla’s dominance in the U.S. EV market, according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives. While the tax credit has been a key incentive for many consumers, Tesla is uniquely positioned to thrive even without it, thanks to its lower price points and strong market share.

Rumors about the tax credit disappearing under Trump’s second term were circulating even before his re-election, and now, according to Reuters, sources close to the administration confirm plans to eliminate it. This would impact both consumers and automakers, especially those relying on the credit to make their EVs more affordable.

Ives believes that, unlike other companies, Tesla can maintain its sales even without the tax credit. Traditional automakers like GM and Ford have struggled to create EVs that truly challenge Tesla’s dominance. Their EV models, while more affordable, have not yet reached the level of consumer appeal and performance Tesla has.

The loss of the tax credit could also make EVs from other automakers less attractive from a price standpoint, giving Tesla a competitive edge. Tesla's scale and lower prices allow it to continue leading the EV market, even if the credit is removed.

While the move could slow down Detroit’s transition to electric vehicles, it’s expected to hurt newer companies like Rivian, which are still grappling with high production costs and supply chain issues. In the end, the tax credit's removal will likely make it harder for consumers to afford new EVs, but Tesla’s position seems secure, at least for now.
