Tesla’s sales rebounded sharply in May, with the refreshed Model Y leading the charge, recording 3,580 units sold in Australia—its highest monthly figure since March 2024. According to the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), Tesla’s overall sales reached 3,897 vehicles in May, a dramatic increase from just 500 in April, when shipping delays from China hampered deliveries. The Model Y’s performance more than doubled its May 2024 sales (1,609 units), while the Model 3 saw a decline, selling only 317 units compared to 1,958 a year earlier.

Despite the May rebound, Tesla’s year-to-date sales remain down 48% (9,557 units), with the Model 3 plummeting 70% (2,583 units) and the Model Y down 27.4% (6,974 units). The company attributed earlier slumps to factory retooling for the updated Model Y, customer anticipation for the new model, and backlash against CEO Elon Musk’s political affiliations. However, with fresh inventory arriving—including a single shipment carrying over 3,500 vehicles—Tesla’s Australian division expects a strong June quarter.
Polestar, another EV manufacturer, also posted growth in May with 243 sales (up 66% YoY), led by the Polestar 4 (133 units). Meanwhile, industry-wide EV adoption in Australia, which dipped to 5% earlier this year, may recover as Tesla regains momentum. Though Tesla’s market share has fallen from over 60%, the Model Y remains Australia’s top-selling EV by a significant margin.
