Morgan Stanley's latest report reveals Tesla plans to debut its autonomous robotaxi fleet in Austin this June, starting with 10-20 Model Y vehicles before expanding to more cities. Unlike standard FSD-equipped Teslas, these robotaxis will be monitored by "a significant number of remote safety operators" who can intervene in real-time to ensure safety. Tesla employees will oversee operations remotely, guaranteeing the fleet "never rolls over." Earlier in May, Tesla released a demo video showing passengers summoning the robotaxi via smartphone, with a safety driver in the front and passenger seats in the back.

Elon Musk envisions Tesla eventually manufacturing dedicated robotaxis—fully owned by the company and integrated into its network, similar to Uber’s corporate fleet. Last October, Tesla unveiled the "Cybercab," a futuristic autonomous vehicle with no steering wheel, pedals, or charging port, featuring gull-wing doors and seating for two. Priced around $30,000 per unit, the Cybercab relies solely on FSD but faces delays due to technological and production constraints, with mass deployment expected only by 2027.
For now, Tesla will use modified Model Y and Model 3 vehicles for real-world testing and early-stage robotaxi operations. Musk has also proposed a peer-to-peer model where Tesla owners could lend out their idle cars as autonomous taxis, earning passive income—though this remains a long-term vision pending regulatory and technical hurdles.
