Tesla's Software Update Preferences: Choosing Between Standard and Advanced

Tesla's Software Update Preferences: Choosing Between Standard and Advanced

Tesla owners have the flexibility to choose their software update preferences via the Software tab in their vehicle’s settings, offering two options: Standard and Advanced. This choice significantly impacts how and when updates are delivered. Tesla explains that by selecting “Advanced,” drivers will receive over-the-air software updates that introduce new features and refine existing functionalities as soon as they are made available for their specific model.

The decision boils down to whether you prefer frequent updates with new features or would rather wait for more stable software versions. Many had previously assumed this feature was obsolete, a remnant from Tesla's Early Access programs introduced in 2018. However, Elon Musk recently confirmed its continued relevance. In a post on X, he pointed out that Tesla is still utilizing this preference setting for distributing updates, particularly updates related to Full Self-Driving (FSD) v12.5, which some users with the “Advanced” setting will receive despite ongoing issues.

The Software Update Preference option can be found under Controls > Software, with Standard set as the default choice. Tesla appears to tailor updates not just by vehicle configuration and location but also based on individual update preference. Those who opt for Advanced could enjoy quicker access to updates and more frequent bug fixes.

It's reassuring to see that Tesla is actively using this preference, but clearer communication regarding their update release process would certainly enhance user experience. If you wish to stay ahead with the latest enhancements, consider setting your vehicle to Advanced.
