Tesla has proudly announced a significant achievement for its most popular vehicle, the Model Y crossover, in Norway. The electric vehicle manufacturer reports that over 60,000 Model Y units are now traversing Norway’s highways, cementing its status as the nation’s leading electric vehicle.
The announcement came via Tesla's official Tesla Europe & Middle East account on the social media platform X, where the company cheekily addressed common criticisms regarding electric vehicles' performance in colder climates. “We were told EVs don’t work in colder climates. There are now more EVs than petrol cars on the road in Norway,” the post emphasized, accompanied by a graphic celebrating the Model Y’s milestone.
Norway has long been recognized as one of the most EV-friendly nations globally, a fact underscored by the early adoption of Tesla’s electric cars, including the Model S, which first hit Norwegian roads in 2013. By April of the following year, this pioneering model achieved unprecedented monthly sales figures, setting a record for any vehicle in the country.
In 2023, the Tesla Model Y soared to the top of Norway’s sales chart, with an impressive 23,088 units sold, while Tesla vehicles comprised roughly 20% of all new vehicles registered in the nation last year, according to the Norwegian Road Federation.
Despite increased competition from both new and established automakers, Tesla has successfully maintained a stronghold in Norway’s automotive market. As of now, local sales records show that Tesla has delivered 61,540 Model Y and 45,612 Model 3 units, bringing the total number of vehicles sold in Norway to 143,388.
