Tesla Seeks Senior Test Engineer for Comprehensive Testing of Semi Electric Truck

Tesla is on the hunt for a Senior Test Engineer to rigorously evaluate the performance of its all-electric Class 8 Semi truck, emphasizing the need for "abuse testing." This unique role, based in Fremont, California, will focus on stress-testing Tesla’s advanced power electronics and battery systems to better understand their limits and potential vulnerabilities during routine logistics operations.

With the Semi produced at a discreet facility near the Gigafactory in Reno, Nevada, Tesla's strategy involves simulating extreme conditions that these trucks may encounter on the road. According to the job listing, the Abuse Testing & Engineering team aims to "push energy storage and power electronics to their limits and beyond," employing sophisticated methods to apply electrical, mechanical, and thermal stresses on the systems.

Semi trucks endure intense workloads, regularly covering 600 miles or more daily. They face a plethora of challenges, including harsh climate conditions and rugged terrains, all of which can impact vehicle performance. The responsibilities outlined for this role include collaborating with electronics and battery pack teams, developing comprehensive test plans, executing tests for various failure scenarios, and documenting findings to support continuous improvement.

As Tesla gradually rolls out the Semi to customers and expands its fleet, the insights gained from these rigorous tests will play a crucial role in enhancing vehicle reliability and performance. Just recently, NFI shared valuable feedback regarding the efficiency of its fleet utilizing the Semi, further emphasizing the importance of robust testing in real-world scenarios. By seeking expertise in abuse testing, Tesla demonstrates its commitment to innovation and operational excellence in the electric trucking sector.
