Tesla's Full Self-Driving Trial: Limited Uptake Despite Price Reductions

Credit card data reveals that only about 2% of Tesla owners who tried the free month trial of Full Self-Driving ultimately purchased or subscribed to the service. Tesla initiated the trial in March, coinciding with a price reduction from $12,000 to $8,000 or a $99 per month subscription option, contradicting Elon Musk's previous statements about increasing prices as the technology advanced.

YipitData analyzed transactions from around 3,500 trial participants, finding that only around 50 converted to Full Self-Driving subscriptions or purchases by May 5th. Elon Musk directed Tesla staff to demonstrate Full Self-Driving with each car delivery in a bid to bolster adoption.

Despite some users finding the trial impressive, many were hesitant to commit to the annual $1,200 cost. The latest v12 version of the system, while an improvement, still imposes speed limits in certain areas and exhibits errors, leading many to prefer Autopilot, especially for city driving.

In essence, Tesla faces the challenge of demonstrating Full Self-Driving's clear value proposition to potential customers in order to increase its adoption rate.
