Tesla Introduces Manual Charge Port Defrosting Option Just in Time for Winter

As winter approaches, Tesla has rolled out a new software update that allows owners to manually activate the charge port heater, providing a timely solution for those in colder climates. This new feature addresses a common issue that Tesla owners have faced in freezing temperatures—the charge port freezing shut.

Back in 2018, during the first winter with the Model 3, Tesla acknowledged challenges in cold weather, including frozen door handles, jammed windows, and especially, frozen charge ports. A software update followed shortly after to help mitigate some of these issues, including using the vehicle’s climate control system to thaw the charge port.

However, the real breakthrough came in late 2020 when Tesla began installing dedicated heaters for charge ports in its vehicles. Despite this, the charge port heater was typically triggered automatically when the vehicle's defrosting functions were activated. Until now, Tesla owners didn't have the option to manually control the charge port heater.

With the latest software update, Tesla is now giving owners the ability to activate the charge port heater independently through the vehicle’s menu: simply go to Controls > Service > Charge Port Heater. This feature, however, is only available on a limited number of vehicles, including some 2023 Model Ys and 2024 Model Xs running software version 2024.44.3.1.

The introduction of this option comes just in time for the winter months, allowing Tesla owners to target the charge port heater when necessary, improving overall efficiency and preventing charging interruptions due to freezing temperatures. This is a welcomed addition for Tesla drivers in colder regions.
