Tesla Set to Launch Seven-Seat Model Y from Giga Shanghai in October

Tesla is reportedly gearing up to produce a seven-seat version of its popular Model Y crossover at its Giga Shanghai facility, with sales targeting both the Chinese and European markets beginning this October. This information comes from Chinese media outlet National Business Daily, which stated that the new variant has successfully passed the necessary certifications for its European release.

Previously, there were discussions about Tesla China planning to unveil an updated version of the Model Y in early 2024, with hopes of commencing sales later that year. Initial reports indicated that this seven-seat variant would have an increased weight of approximately 45 kg (99 lbs) compared to the five-seat model, alongside a passenger weight limit that would rise by 70 kg (154 lbs).

While National Business Daily's claims seem credible, a report from Shanghai Securities News has raised some skepticism. Citing an alleged insider, it suggested that production of the seven-seat variant had not yet commenced at Giga Shanghai, though this insider did not refute the other points made in the original report.

Currently, Tesla's Giga Shanghai facility is focused solely on producing five-seat Model Y variants. This mirrors the situation at Giga Berlin, where only five-seat options are available. Presently, in the U.S., the Model Y Long Range Dual Motor All Wheel Drive is the only version that offers a seven-seat configuration, available for an additional cost of $2,000.

A seven-seat option could significantly appeal to larger families, providing extra seating that, while perhaps not ideal for adults, is well-suited for younger children, enhancing the Model Y's overall versatility and market attractiveness.
