Tesla's FSD to Gain Enhanced Parking Features: Garages, Driveways, and More

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system is set to receive a major update with the upcoming V13 revision, introducing several new parking capabilities that will make it even more autonomous and convenient for users. Currently, FSD can navigate out of a parking space or garage, but it faces limitations when it comes to parking at your destination. That’s about to change.

Garage Parking and Driveways

Tesla’s VP of AI, Ashok Elluswamy, recently confirmed that future updates to FSD V13 will include support for parking in garages, driveways, parking spots, and even pulling over on the side of the road. This feature will provide drivers with more flexibility in how and where their vehicles park. Tesla’s FSD system will likely give users the ability to choose from available parking options, or it might suggest parking locations based on the car’s surroundings.

Currently, FSD doesn’t handle parking in garages or driveways well, with some owners having to creatively guide the system using tape or paint to mark parking spots. In the near future, FSD is expected to autonomously park itself in your garage without any manual intervention, though this feature may be more suitable for larger garages where the car can easily navigate.

Challenges with Tight Spaces

While the new feature will likely work seamlessly in larger, spacious garages, the system might face challenges in extremely tight garages where precision becomes crucial. The limited vision at close distances could make tight maneuvers tricky. To address this, Tesla may offer printable guides that users can stick on their garage walls or floors to help the car park more accurately.

Many owners have shared their experience parking in urban or suburban garages with only inches to spare, making this an interesting challenge that Tesla is keen to solve.

Parking Garages

In multi-level parking garages, FSD is already capable of navigating out of a parking space and finding an exit. However, the system tends to stay close to the walls of the garage until it locates an exit. Tesla is working on improving FSD’s ability to handle multi-level parking garages with better navigation and smarter exit strategies.

Tesla’s data collection and vehicle-to-fleet communication could play a significant role in improving parking garage navigation. By understanding common entrances and exits, Tesla can refine its FSD to make parking in these types of environments even smoother.

Additional Destination Options

FSD V13 will also add more destination options, including the ability to pull over to the side of the road or park in designated spots, driveways, or garages. This expanded functionality will bring Tesla closer to fully autonomous driving, eliminating the need for AutoPark in some situations.

As these updates roll out, they will bring Tesla closer to achieving the dream of Unsupervised FSD. The ability to pull over at your destination and have the vehicle park itself will be a game-changer for the system, enhancing convenience and making autonomous driving a more viable reality.

Tesla’s ongoing improvements to its FSD system demonstrate the company’s commitment to bringing cutting-edge, fully autonomous driving capabilities to the market. As more features are added, Tesla owners will have an even smoother and more convenient driving experience.
