Tesla's ambitious Megapack factory in Shanghai is making significant strides in its construction, with recent reports indicating the facility is now 60% complete. This progress was highlighted by local media outlet IT Home, reflecting Tesla's commitment to ramping up energy storage production in China as they aim to launch Megapack manufacturing by the first quarter of 2025.
The Shanghai Megafactory is being designed to eventually replicate the output of Tesla's Lathrop, California plant, targeting an impressive annual capacity of approximately 40 GWh, which equates to around 10,000 Megapack units each year. As demand for Tesla's grid-scale energy solutions continues to grow, the Lathrop facility has been scaling up production, underscoring the increasing importance of these battery storage systems.
Tesla initially held a signing ceremony for the Shanghai Megafactory in December, but construction materials didn’t start arriving until March 2024. The official groundbreaking took place on May 23, and since then, the site has seen rapid construction progress, reminiscent of the swift development of Gigafactory Shanghai.
Last month, the factory was estimated to be about 45% complete, highlighting the remarkable pace at which this new site has been coming together. Located in the Lingang New Area industrial park, the Megafactory spans around 200,000 square meters (approximately 656,168 square feet).
In the most recent quarter, Tesla achieved a record 9.4 GWh of battery storage deployments, following a significant 4.1 GWh in the first quarter, reflecting a 157% year-over-year increase. This growing momentum aligns with CEO Elon Musk's predictions that energy sales would soon begin to outstrip the revenue from the automotive sector.
